Newcastle has two Fat Hippo restaurants: Fat Hippo Underground on Shakespeare Street in the city centre, set in a Grade II listed former bank vault, and the original Fat Hippo on St George’s Terrace in Jesmond. Newcastle (Centre). Fat Hippo Newcastle (Centre), also known as Fat Hippo Underground, is at 2–6 Shakespeare Street, NE1 6AQ, just off Grey Street and a few minutes’ walk from Grey’s Monument and Monument Metro station. The restaurant is underground in a Grade II listed former bank vault, reached down a flight of stairs. Fat Hippo says staff will help carry pushchairs, and the facilities are on the same level once you’re down. Fat Hippo says parking is available on Shakespeare Street directly outside or on Grey Street around the corner.

Newcastle (Jesmond). Fat Hippo Jesmond, the original Fat Hippo restaurant, is at 35a St Georges Terrace, West Jesmond, NE2 2SU, about a four-minute walk from West Jesmond Metro station. There’s one small step into the restaurant, which staff will help with, and the facilities are on one level, but there’s no disabled toilet. Fat Hippo says non-permit holders can park on St George’s Terrace until 5pm, and on Thornleigh Road after 5pm.
